NODA Review

Tads Theatre Group “Night Must Fall” October 2008

Director: Kevin Birkett

A traditional feel to this play, but well-delivered by the cast, in a very nice set, that was entirely believable.  There were a few costume faux pas, but overall an enjoyable evening.

Cate McLoughlin (Olivia) gave us a steady performance, with a few dark moments, whilst Sue Sachon (Mrs. Bramson) was the very epitome of an elderly lady used to getting her own way, but melting somewhat under the attention of a younger man, played by Steven Pryer (Dan), who started a little shakily I thought, but really came into his own later in the play, showing the cunning but almost childlike tendency of a slightly unhinged man. Gemma Ferguson (Dora), showed extremely good comic timing, and although only a small part she gave it her all. Judy Palmer (Mrs. Terence) played the know-all housekeeper well. Steve Calder was a slightly bumbling detective, which contrasted well against the acerbity of Mrs. Bramson, and the naivety of Dora and Olivia, whilst Chris McLoughlin (Hubert) in what I understand was his first performance with Tads, gave us a nice interpretation of the slightly pompous young man, whose only real interest is himself. David Sachon (Lord Chief Justice) and Fran Hibbard (Nurse) gave good performances.

The pulling of tabs between each scene was not always necessary, and slowed the action down a little in some places, but I felt this was a good offering in a venue that is currently undergoing refurbishment and augers well for the future.
